Death at Wallaby Ranch

The
news found by the automatic Google News scraper as seen at the
Oz Report:

A 59-year-old man from Vermont with several years of hang gliding
experience died after hitting a tree while trying to land a hang glider Sunday
afternoon in Polk County.

Witnesses told the Polk County Sheriff's Office that Anthony Ameo was trying to
land the hang glider at Wallaby Ranch in Davenport about 2:15 p.m., when he hit
a tree and fell to the ground, the sheriff's office said.

Ameo, from Shellfield, Vt., was flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He
died from his injuries during surgery about 5 p.m.

Ameo was at Wallaby Ranch, a commercial hang gliding park, when the crash
occurred. He came to Florida with a friend Oct. 30 for a vacation that included
hang gliding, the sheriff's office said.

1) Of course, it is not the fault of anyone at Wallaby Ranch that
this pilot died. There is a huge amount of flying activity at flight parks and
there have been deaths at Wallaby Ranch and Quest Air. With all this activity
there are bound to be deaths, just like there are deaths out on Interstate 4,
next to Wallaby. Wallaby has an enviable safety record.

2) We are reminded again that hang gliding does carry a risk, and landing in
trees is dangerous, as are landings in general.

3) My sympathies to the families involved, to Wallaby Ranch, and to all who were
there and had to experience this unfortunate incident.
