Competition - a losing proposition?
I get the impression when I speak to USHPA BOD members (and a few
of the cheaper competition pilots) that they feel that the meet organizers are
cashing in big time with the high fees that they charge for their competitions.
Is there any truth to that? Maybe, with well subscribed paragliding meets, but
it doesn't seem to be the case with hang gliding competitions.
I spoke with a couple of meet organizers recently and they claimed to finally
having broken just about even on their latest in a series of competitions. One
organizer claimed to have lost $5,000 per competition for the previous three.
The cost was covered by a hang gliding manufacturer.
So let's just assume for a minute that this is in fact the case. That putting on
hang gliding competitions is not a money making proposition. What does that mean
for how meet organizers should be treated both personally and institutional?
