In early January I sent you a link to the Sailplane meet in Chile
that was presented with live online tracking of the pilots. First of all, thank
you for publishing the link and information on ‘The Oz Report’. I believe this
boosted the competition’s online viewership.

I just read a follow-up discussion regarding the meet. The online viewership
quantity reached 80,000 with 24% of the viewers being Germans, 20% Polish (the
meet winner was Polish) and on a smaller scale, Czechs, Americans and British.
The team from Yellowbrick (which is connected to Rock IT Group) provided the
tracking and internet presentation.

I believe you were involved in a meet in Australia at the time so I don’t know
if you had a chance to view the online tracking. From my online observation
perspective it was a huge success and quite fascinating. The organizers had two
commentators (non-competing pilots) giving real-time voice coverage and
descriptions each day while they and the online viewers were watching live via
Google Earth. The presentation was very educational and quite addictive (I
didn’t get much work done during competition hours). For the next presentation I
would suggest the entire broadcast each day be recorded and compressed into a
video file to be made available for viewing by people in distant time-zones.

I recently contacted the primary technical person (Nick Farrell) responsible for
making the meet work so successfully online and expressed interest in having a
similar presentation for hang gliding competitions. I asked what hardware and
software is required. I also mentioned you and the ‘The Oz Report’ and your
committed involvement with hang gliding and competitions. I suggested that I
would contact you to see if you would be interested in setting up something
similar for one of your future competitions. Nick responded with this message:

That would be great - I'd be really happy to speak to Davis and see if there's
somewhere we can test it out - we know the technology works, it'll be
interesting to see how it would adapt to competitions/rules in hang-gliding, and
how live coverage might work - I know very little about your sport and the
competition style, so I am keen to find out more!!

I have replied to James and left an email for Nick. I also sent this
note to Flavio.
