Central Florida so far
The complaint here is that it has been windy and cold (day time
temperatures in the lower fifties) all winter. Yesterday wasn't like that. Light
southeast winds. Blue skies. Seventy degrees on the ground, nice and warm. Cool
(maybe cold) a bit higher up at 4,200'. Yesterday was the day that Spring broke out for the Quest Air pilots. Six went
flying and we were a bit later joined in the air by Mikey (Barber) and Tom
Nejame (on an Atos) from Wallaby on their way back to Wallaby after making the
turnpoint at Quest. We had punched up wind to the south. I saw Mikey come in
under me and I said to myself, that must be Mike Barber and sure enough there he
was later when we landed back at Quest. He decided that it would be a bit
difficult to make it all the way back to Wallaby and that Quest Air was a
friendlier place to land. Tom made it back to Wallaby. The air was friendly and there were lots of small chunky thermals, most of them
weak and those get us to maybe 3,000'. A nice one four miles east of the Seminole
glider port that I spotted for a sailplane was 400 fpm. Greg Dinaur and I did a
30 mile out and return to the sailplane port. We started late (2 PM) so we
didn't have enough time to go further. The forecast for March. Cooler than normal and more rain than normal.
El Nino continues.
