Judging their own
The Aerobatic pilots were happy to get their own competition
program under the USHPA at the last BOD meeting which at least gives them the
outlines of what should happen next. They've got a three day meet set for the
last three days of the
East Coast
Championship in early June. They are also set for the Santa Cruz Flats Race
in September to go along with the Festival of Flight that will be put on by the
local hang gliding club. One problem seems to be finding judges. They have always complained that the
judges are poor and poorly trained. The USHPA set aside some money for training
as did the Foundation for Free Flight and CIVL. David Glover came up with what I consider a perfect solution. Aerobatic pilots
should judge each other out in the open. Pilots are towed up one at a time. The
pilot does his routine and all the other competitors judge it, discussing it
among themselves. With everyone around them listening in. If you think about it for a while, you'll see why this is a perfect solution -
prisoner's dilemma.
