It didn't work out

Our quest to break Jonny and Dustin's record didn't work out to say the least.
Alex Cuddy launched first at 10:40 AM and didn't get anything and landed ten
minutes after he launched. I got pulled up at 10:50 to a nice dark thick cloud
just to the west of Quest Air, but cloud base was 1000' lower than yesterday
(2,600' vs. 3,600') and then I didn't get any more lift under the cloud street
nor out in the sun shine and landed north of Groveland.

Alex tried again and seeing only shade to north just made it back to Quest after
getting to Groveland.

The sat photo above shows the cu's at 2:15 PM. You can see the predominant
southwest flow in front of the approaching front to the northwest.

The sky finally opened up here at 3 PM after being too dark and overcast with
thick clouds and a low cloud base all day.

Here is a shot taken at 9:30 AM when there was a slight break in the low clouds:

You can see that it is shaded at the field.

The cloud development was due, of course, to instability provided by the
approaching front, not local heating and moisture in the air. The cu's lasted at
least until midnight last night, if not later. They were there when I poked my
head out the door at 8 AM.

The sky was black before 10 AM like the overrunning in Zapata (there was a
strong south wind) with a low cloud base, but lots of not well formed cu's,
mixed with streets. When I launched there were a mix of clouds with higher cloud
shading areas, and lower cu's not working in the cloud streets. Very much not
like the day before.
