After the front at Quest Air
The front came through during the night and the clouds were thick
in the morning. But as the front proceeded further south during the late morning
the blue behind it began to dominate. The winds were 10 mph out of the
northwest. Four of us launched starting about 2:30 PM and I found ultra smooth conditions
on tow out of the field and in the air. I pinned off early, 1,400' just over the
field, and hung in the less than 100 fpm lift as I drifted south east from Quest
Air. The lift continued to be weak and the conditions smooth as I drifted and climbed
to 2,500'. As I wasn't getting very high, I figured that it would be best to
stay around until I found some stronger lift. There was plenty of little bits of
lift around and while I would start low again over the field at 1,200' or so, I
always found lift and was able to go with it no matter how weak it was and how
low I was. I finally did find some brief bits of 400 fpm and got back up to 2,500' not that
far south of the field. That allowed me to head to the north upwind side of the
field I didn't find much lift there until I was down to 800' over the swamp to
the east. I started back up again but decided that there was little reason to
keep this back and forth and decided to land. Olaf had been pulled way north and quite high and enjoyed flying around Quest
for at least three hours. We are still waiting for the top of the lift to get higher.
