Last week we had the Mexican Hang Gliding Nationals. This year it
was one FAI-2 comp of 7 days, held at the launch site of San Marcos, Jalisco
State. It is a beautiful mountain take-off with a big dry lake in front and a
spectacular view to "the volcano of fire" with its snowed peak at 4,200 meters.
There were thirty pilots flying, with ten of them international pilots.
We had six very good days of flying, with strong thermals of 15 m/s (3000 ft/m)
at noon and cloud base at 4,500 meters MSL (14,700 ft) launching at 1,800 meters
(5,900 ft). The longest task was a 157 km triangle with ten pilots in goal.
Every day we flew with amazing vultures and golden eagles, which luckily are not
as aggressive as the wedge tailed eagle of Australia
At the end of the comp I saw everyone was tired and very happy about the great
flights and all the kilometers flown and we hope next year we see more and more
happy faces.
