Incredibly, I was ready to go for the first day of classes on April 12. The
teachers came in the week before to prepare and we were still painting and
sanding and cleaning and waiting on new desks and trying to turn the schoolyard
back into a playground from a construction site. But it all got done, as it
usually does.

The last week of March we had the EcoSurf Volunteers here and they did some
painting and hung all the room signs, including the one for/from Belinda and
Davis. They also ran their vacation day camp program for all the kids in town
and brought us two huge suitcases of supplies, so I didn’t need to buy anything
for the classrooms.

The public schools give their students a page long list of supplies that their
families will need to buy at the beginning of each year. We only ask for
notebooks and a pencil. We have thousands of pencils, but if we constantly give
them out then the kids constantly lose them. Trying to teach them to take care
of things is hard and on-going. Also to make them understand litter. They don’t
even see the candy wrappers that they drop on the ground, so this is our main
theme at morning assemblies this year.
