Cloudbase Foundation in Ghana

The Cloudbase Foundation, an organization of hang glider and
paraglider pilots with the mission "to help children wherever we fly" has formed
a new relationship with the Bless the Children orphanage in Nkwatia, in the
Kwahu area of eastern Ghana. As a beginning, we have committed to raising
$3,000 for a new water tank, and are seeking donations.
According to Sabrina Krewin, organizer of the annual
Ghana Paragliding
Festival, "The orphanage gets water via the local sewage/water system, which
unfortunately is inconsistent. The water pipes are usually turned on every one
to two weeks, at which point they fill up every available container. They
already have one tank, but when this water runs out, the kids are forced to
cross the street to fetch water from a stream. They have to carry water in
buckets about 400 meters back to the orphanage, making multiple trips in order
to get enough water to bathe, wash their clothes and also a supply for the
kitchen. This water can be polluted and is often unfresh because local
goat/cattle herders also bring their animals to drink from the source, and many
other inhabitants wash their clothes in the stream."
Bless the Children has twenty resident orphans, aged from two and a half to
eighteen years. These children live at the orphanage, but attend the local
public schools in order to be integrated into society. The orphanage also
provides partial support to twenty parentless children who live outside of the
home, for whom the extended family can not completely provide.
The Cloudbase Foundation has already been responsible for a new classroom and
teacher's salary at Los Algarrobos school in Canoa, Ecuador, as well as funding
for medical supplies at a mission in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Other projects,
including some in the U.S., are under development, and we welcome suggestions.

From the very beginning the Cloudbase Foundation and the work that
we carried out in Ecuador with the James Dean Byrd Foundation has been a joint
effort of paraglider and hang glider pilots. Without paraglider pilots we would
not have found La Escuela Bilingue los Algarrobos, the English school in Canoa.
This effort in Ghana comes about because of the Ghana Paragliding Festival and
once again our focus is on helping children wherever we fly.
