We started the day with a forecast of good lift and a light to
moderate south wind. With probable rain for the next day (and the temporary
Presidential TFR moving even closer to us) it was decided to call a "fish bowl"
style task to keep people nearby and do a probable meet end that evening.
The task committee ended up with a 63k triangle to the west and north. Open
class was to fly it twice around (125k), with sport class to do it once.
Unfortunately the wind was stronger than anticipated. While the tracks of our
top two finishers showed how well a pilot really on his game could run this
course:
Most of us would have been really happy to have a track like the second one,
where he made the 1st turnpoint!
After a recheck of the next days weather, its decided to formally call it the
last day. We had a great dinner for all the contestants and volunteers.
We had exceptional volunteers all week. We had Bill Finn and family cooking
breakfast and dinner for us, we had a lot of launch line help, and we
coordinated retrievals (and supplied retrieve drivers) for most of the fliers.
With that combined effort and luck with the weather we had three good flying
days out of a possible 4.5 (Monday extension)
It was gratifying to hear from all, that they wanted to come back to next years
event. (Well ok, were thinking about it)
