East Coast Championship reprised
We always have a great time at the East Coast Championship and Adam
and Sunny do a bang up job of putting on a great meet. With the good weather
this year we had five out of seven days of flying. The only fly in the ointment
is that on two of the really good days the task committee blew the task call.
This is a lesson, don't bring your agenda to the task committee meeting. Listen
to the weather prediction and obey. Set a task that can actually be flown on
that day.
The country side is so open, so inviting, so forgiving. You can drift forever at
500' and not be worried about landing options. The substantial winds that we had
(up to 22 mph) were never a concern. The towing was smooth and the thermals
excellent. I love flying in high wind conditions in the flats when the thermals
are smooth. The country side goes by so quickly that you feel like you are
really racing.
June is a good month for coming here, before the corn gets too high. The weather
is generally good. We had two fronts come through, but they only closed down one
day each.
I wonder what it would take to get sixty pilots to come to this competition. If
way more than that went to Tegelberg and did not fly for two weeks, what does it
take to get them to come here and fly as much as we did?
More NTSS points upfront?
The meet is very inexpensive. The scenery second to none. The local culture,
seafood from the Chesapeake Bay, etc.
