The 2010 US Nationals at Big Spring

Larry arrives at goal first. Zac is fast. One tug down (out of two) so open
start times. I get sick in the air 50 km out, fly for forty more but have to
land. So I can't write much now.

A little later, having recovered somewhat:

One of the tugs had a problem so we were reduced to one tug. Zac came up with
the idea of no start windows, just your time when you left the start cylinder. I
also asked David to limit the tows to 1,500' AGL, but Jonny wanted to get the
first few tows to somewhat higher if needed.

I was the first one off, and waved off at 1,900'. No lift around or during the
tow so I headed east to get under the cu's and at 1,200' found weak lift. As I
was low I stayed with it and climbed up to almost cloud base.

Other pilots stayed over to where they were towed to but were not getting up.
Finally, I drifted to the west side of the airfield and hooked up with Larry
Bunner, who did finally find a very strong thermal and Dave Proctor. We drifted
under a cu to 7,500' as it drifted down the course line and took the start at
around 1:55 PM, with Larry a little higher and Dave a little lower.

There was a lot of blue for the first twenty kilometers but a nice cu about a
third of the way in. We got to the cu and climbed back to 7,000'. Larry and I
left and went on glide toward small cu's eleven kilometers away. As we got to
them they disappeared. I found a little false lift and Larry came back under me
but there wasn't enough there to keep us.

I headed four kilometers southeast to a good looking cu and Larry followed below
hoping I would start turning at any minute as he was too low. Down to 600' AGL I
found a little something that Larry and I worked on for twenty one minutes getting
back up to 5,800' (elevation is about 2,600'). Larry was happy with that save.
Dave didn't make it across the blue hole.

When I woke up this morning I had a bit of a headache from sinus conditions
(cold?, allergy?), that started in Italy. I had stopped taking the medicine the
night before as I was thinking that it interfered with my sleep. I wasn't
getting much sleep as Belinda was suffering much worse symptoms (coughing all
night). Now I was beginning to suffer more from the headache.

Larry and I pressed on and now under lots of cu's found 400 fpm to
above 9,000'. Larry got a better climb. I lost Larry at this point, and was
really beginning to suffer from nausea and air sickness like symptoms.

Climbing to 9,000' and keeping cool I was having a hard time drinking enough
water. Usually I don't drink that much from my camelback but now I needed a sip
every minute as my throat and lips dried out. This seemed to be part of the
illness. I headed south of the highway (Larry stayed north) and ran into 1,000 fpm
down for almost five minutes.

At this point I was thinking about landing as I felt that I couldn't see straight
any more nor focus on flying. But I just hoped that it wasn't so bad that I
would have to stop. I found lift and kept going getting back over 8,000'. But it
was too much. As I got near the turnpoint at Andrews I found a nice semi
cultivated field and landed. I was too sick to break down my glider or even
stand. Thankfully our driver, Will, and a neighbor helped out.

Larry had stayed downwind of the course line, north of the highway and didn't find the big sink that I
found. A few more thermals then he found the turnpoint and hit a boomer on the
other side which made gliding in Gains, the goal, easy and fast. As we were the first to
start, Larry got to goal first and took the arrival points.
