Recently we have added a WPRS ranking for Sport Class Hang Gliders
and we hope that this will encourage you to run Sport Class events, either as
separate competitions or as a sub class of your Class 1 HG competitions. In May 2010, the number of participants needed to validate a Sport Class event
was reduced to 6 (these pilots must hold a valid sporting license). Minimum
numbers for Class 5 is also 6. Minimum numbers for Class 1 remains at 15,
currently. The definition for Sport Class can be found in Section 7A of the Sporting Code
1.5.1.1 Sport Class can be run alongside a hang gliding Class 1 or Class 5 event,
and there is no additional sanction fee for running a Sport Class competition,
where a hang gliding event is already sanctioned. In fact, you can run Class 1,
5, 2 and Sport for a single sanction fee. Sport Class can be tasked and scored as a completely separate competition. If a
Sport class competition is run separately and there are more than 15 pilots
(with valid FAI licenses) then pilots will earn WPRS points in Class 1 and Sport
Class rankings. Alternatively, pilots can fly and be scored the same tasks as a Class 1 event.
In this case the results should be filtered to show the Sport class pilots
separately. When pilots have been scored for both Class 1 and Sport they will
earn WPRS points in both Class 1 and Sport rankings. The latest version of the sanction application form can be downloaded at
http://www.fai.org/hang_gliding/documents Good luck with your competitions in 2011.
