Are some pilots cavalier about aircraft collision avoidance?
Do paraglider pilots just think that they are too slow to get out
of the way?
Are some newer pilots flying in areas that have too much traffic?

The key point is that there seems to be a feeling that there is
little that can be done to avoid airplanes because of the disparity in
maneuverability and speed, coupled with the feeling that "I have a right to be
here too" that is leading some to use a " I was in Class E airspace so I have a
right to be here" even though the area was known to be a transition zone for
aircraft on approach. It's this legalistic pushing the envelope that can hurt
everybody. Moving a quarter mile either way would have avoided any question.
Instead, it was a justification for us to carry ADS-B out so we'd be "seen". Another issue was a request for information on the marking of sites on
sectionals. They described their situation and I responded with my knowledge of
the procedure from when I got that accepted by the FAA back in 1980 or 81, and
the FAA's concern that it be for sites with more than just occasional use
because there are too many symbols on sectionals now. I told them that their
description indicated that they were probably good candidates if the use in
their opinion was greater than occasional and to contact the USHPA office who
would handle the requests. I then told them that the best thing they could do
was to visit the local GA airports and contact their approach control and do the
PR work to show that we knew the rules and were good members of the aviation
community and that would do more for their situation than any symbol. The email
I got back was pretty short and gave the impression that I had given them more
data than they wanted. I just feel that we may be getting a little cocky about our position in the
aviation world and some of the newer pilots may be pushing the edges more than
is smart. From your descriptions of your flights, and the descriptions of other
long time pilots, I can see a good awareness of airspace issues and a
conservative approach. I just hope that there are ways to pass this on to the
newer folks. Both if the above situations dealt with paraglider pilot, but I've
heard a few newer hang glider pilots sounding a little cavalier also.
