Flying the Wills Wing Covert
I wanted to take a few minutes to say how much I am enjoying
flying the new Jeff Shaprio designed and built (with help from Kara and Nya)
Wills Wing Covert harness. I have written about it to some extent so far on this
trip to Australia (see here, here,
here, and in more
detail here). The harness is very comfortable and I've had no problem flying in it for six
hours or more. Unlike before I made my customizations, my shoulders feel great.
And my whole body is supported well. There is a "myth" that racing harnesses are
supposed to be uncomfortable. This is definitely not the case with the Covert.
My feet, my legs, my truck, and my shoulders all are well supported and the
whole experience is fantastic. My experience with harnesses made for me is that they don't fit me. I've been
flying a Rotor harness (and still have it) that was made for someone else and it
just happened to fit me. At first the Covert didn't fit me, which caused a
problem with my shoulders, but with some adjustments it is now perfect. I
reduced the length of the boot, lengthening the line to the boot from the slider
by a small amount, and shortened the pitch line by a small amount. Essentially
the Covert was easy to adjust (although figuring out what to do with the boot
for the long term is still up in the air). Of course, the Covert is very aerodynamic in appearance (and therefore, I
assume, in function). It is easy to land, as I can rotate up easily, quickly and
stay up throughout the landing. The materials are first rate at repelling dirt and resisting abrasion. The harness goes back to Jeff for a few updates when I get back.
