With a mostly blue sky it looks like the day has a lot more promise than
yesterday. We leave for launch around 8:30 as the driver seemed to have been
lost on the way to the hotel. Cloud base is below launch when we get there, be
rising quickly. We don't get socked in like on the previous day just surrounded.

We can see the valley floor and all around so it looks like the day with offer
plenty of sunshine and clouds. The task committee calls an eighty-one kilometer
task first north to the tower on a small hill along our ridgeline then back
south across the valley to the east to a second and then third turnpoint over
small hills, then to goal further south all the end of the small hills.

The wind is very light and cross at launch with cu's coming and going overhead.
When I get to launch it is 90 to 110 degree cross so I wait. A push is on. It is
an hour before the first start opens. The start cylinder is twelve kilometers.

I keep waiting until a puff finally comes in. I stand at the edge of the steep
launch face lift the glider high by moving my shoulders back and standing
straight. I pull the glider in so that the base bar is at my feet. What I don't
do is look down the very steep hill, where I will have to run to get up air
speed as there is no wind to give me any speed.

I run out but not down and therefore the nose is high relative to the direction
that I need to run (down the hill), so I can't run as far as I need to to get
the airspeed I need. I stall the glider and blow my launch taking out two
downtubes and tearing eighteen inches of under surface (at least I think that it
all, more inspection tomorrow, I hope).

It's a soft landing in banana trees so I survive without damage. I have been
having good foot launches over the last two years so this is disappointing.

The day continues to look good, although I see that pilots are struggling to get
up to the east of launch (toward the valley). When I get back to the hotel I
call Mike Glennon and he is down between the second and third turnpoints. He says
that the first gaggle that had left him was low 5 km in front of him. The
second gaggle came in high over him.

Mitch said he took the second clock and as he was on final to goal he saw Daniel
under him flying the other way. The last ten miles into goal were super good,
Mitch got to 8,500'. Once he got to goal he circling around and decided to
follow Daniel's example and headed back to Roldanillo and landed nearby. He saw
two at goal and three more coming in behind him as he flew back north.

Claudia said that she got on top in the start circle and instead of following
Manfred's advice that she had heard a thousand times (get on top and stay
there), she headed out and barely got outside the twelve kilometer start circle.
She was kicking herself later for not listening to that distant voice.

Daniel Velez (who is the scorekeeper and got me the glider, and has what we need
to fix it) says that he won the day with David from Brazil just behind him and
Raul six minutes later.
