El Pomo
On Sunday we went flying at the El Pomo launch forty kilometers
northeast of Cali after driving south from Roldanillo. The launch is on the
eastern mountain range unlike the ones at Roldanillo, on the western mountains.
If you look it up in Google Maps or Earth you'll find it hard to see as the area
is covered with cumulus clouds. It was actually overcast until at 3 PM when the whole sky opened up and there
were nice cu's like on Google. But while I decided not to fly, as the Wills Wing
T2 that I had been using (and abusing) had gone back to Bogotá, David and Raul
flew (Mike didn't). They launched around 1:30 and it was still shaded on the
mountains and for as far as we could see in the moist air throughout the huge
expanse of the Cauca valley (the same valley surrounding Roldanillo). The El Pomo launch is a paraglider pilot created wide grass covered convenience
for paraglider pilots (not as rounded as we like). I'll link to videos of
launches there in a few days. David and Raul were able to climb up and get over the mountains and high over
the valley also, after all but one paraglider went down (all those from another
launch nearby). There appear to be many paraglider and hang glider launches in
the mountains near Cali and this one is quite close by.
