Getting ready for the Rob Kells meet
A little over half a dozen pilots were down at the Florida Ridge
on Thursday getting ready for the big competition. The forecast was for
southerly winds, not too strong, and a 30% chance of thunderstorms. The cold
front that is the cause of all the storm related deaths in Alabama (300+), and
other southern states had reached the east coast and was well into Florida up by
Quest Air. It is supposed to go over us tomorrow. But down here the sky was
beautiful and full of cu's. There is a paragliding competition nearby and pilots flew sixty miles up to
Sebring completing their task. Hang glider pilots stayed local for the most
part, including Curt who went so far yesterday. The lift was quite strong (700+
fpm of average, much higher than we've been getting up north) and the cloud base
was 5,000'+. Around 3:30 PM there looked to be an approaching over development and rain so
many pilots landed. The heavy downpours did come but not until 5 PM. There is a
30% chance of rain tomorrow as the front passes though. The weather looks good
for the competition.
