Although the winds were a bit too high in the morning, the task committee had
planned for that eventuality, by setting up a different task for a later start.
It did in fact mellow out a bit and the sky opened up for the late start. It's
hard to say for sure all the "thinking" and "feelings," many subconscious, that
went into the safety committee calling the day. I'm quite sure that Jonny (he,
Shapiro, and Bunner are the safety committee) wanted to fly.
The first three days of the competition were a bit windy also, but apparently
less rough on tow as the wind was more easterly than northeasterly. We can tow
with quite a bit of wind here. It is wide open. Jonny and Bobby went up in a tug
around noon and felt that it was chunky at 200' but smooth above with lift. This
was when the sky was completely covered with clouds. I would say that it is better to not cancel the day early. Especially as the
forecast called for lighter winds. Maybe people were a bit tired after five straight days.
