Narration, live in flight

Many pilots have been asking me to make more videos w/ live
narration and I endeavored to oblige as follows:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvAnmiBPqX8 "A Friday 13th Flight" named due
only to the confluence weekday and date. The flight is a short, 20-mile out and
back between Kagel and Lukens:
http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/451561 It is short and
to the point and there was a meet the next day so editing was done quickly.
However, based on viewer response the live narrating seems to work.
The next day I recorded: "Saturday Soaring Insanity"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0hmOnkn3nc. Aptly named as we had a whole
bunch of race pilots and student or novice pilots mashed into a tight space
under a variable but low cloud deck. I feel it does a good job of eliciting the
pilot's actual experience within the viewer. Needless to say, there was a lot
more going on in this 60-minute flight that was left on the cutting room floor.
GoPro does not offer external mic capability yet. I use an Olympus DS-40 voice
recorder and an Olympus TP-7 mic inserted into my right ear. It does an
admirable job of recording voice, radio, and ambient sounds. However, it is mono
and gives me a stuffy-headed feeling when I watch. Sadly, the clock in the DS-40
runs at a different speed than the GoPro. I have to sync the sound at the start
of the editing timeline then slightly compress the audio track so it also syncs
at the end.
PTT headset maker Steve Prater sent me a kit to make myself a binaural mic setup
and I need to get that soldered together and installed in my helmet ASAP. This
should provide a much more natural feel in the audio track. Thursday is shaping
up nicely for local XC.
