STORIES OF OLD SCHOOL FLYING PROVE A GLOBAL SUCCESS A new book telling stories of the early days of hang gliding has proved a
surprise international success. Dunge Bottom: Tales Of An Unconventional Aviator by John Clarke tells the story
of the authors antics in the early 1970s when hang gliding was in its infancy. Some of my first hang gliders were handmade from bamboo, drain pipes, polythene
and sticky tape. This was a time when there was no health and safety regulations
and no official training available. I recall the first time I actually managed
to get airborne. I was ecstatic that my hang glider flew but then I realised I
didnt have a clue how to fly or land the thing! After that my interest grew
even more and I began microlighting as well, my first microlight being nothing
more than a deckchair with a motor attached. John eventually formed his own hang gliding school in the Peak District which he
ran for 28 years as well as being the National Site Safety Officer for the
British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association. He then semi retired but still
writes and blogs on the sport. I was amazed at the reaction the book has caused. It has sold in the United
States, Australia and New Zealand as well as here in the UK with incredibly
positive reviews The book is available in paperback and Kindle from Amazon.com/Amazon.co.uk and
the publisher. For more information and to read an extract please visit
