The World Record Encampment
We drove down from Austin under skies full of cu's with 7000'
cloud bases. With good southeast winds all day it was a fine time in Zapata for
the pilots there. Unfortunately two hundred to three hundred miles out was a
front and the cu's would not continue up into the panhandle. Pete Lehmann got near 100 miles. Mike Barber maybe 100+ miles. BJ Herring on an
ATOS 265 miles to north of Sonora. Put it down at 6 PM when he felt he wasn't
going fast enough. He got here late and started late at 11 AM. Five Brazilian pilots here including Eduardo and Andre Wolfe. Tune ups for the
Worlds next month. Four Brazilians flew later (Andre didn't as he keeps getting sick from his young
daughter in day care). Three reported 7 m/s (1400 fpm) lift in the afternoon in
Zapata. One pilot had a weaklink break at 250' and got up very fast. They've
never seen such good conditions. Of course, it is very good in Zapata in the afternoon. We try to leave Zapata
when it is very weak in the early morning, so we don't often get to experience
the sensational lift here in the afternoon.
