Into the Sky
http://intothesky.fr Two versions, English or French narration, of the trip of fifteen hang glider
pilots (mostly rigid wings) to Namibia to set triangle and out and return
records (and personal bests) over desert territory with very few roads. A
container full of ATOSes and a few flex wings along with a couple of trikes,
delivered by train to a farm far into the desert hinterland which was a base of
operations for these mostly French pilots heading south for the northern
hemisphere winter. This is a well produced fifty two minute film/video DVD chronicling their
adventure and telling the story through multiple interviews with the pilots,
subtitled in English. It tells a story familiar to many hang glider pilots about
why we fly set against a very severe backdrop of desert and high altitude oxygen
supplemented flying and dealing with the over development that one expects in
such circumstances. The only drawback I found was the world record claims which I couldn't
completely verify. There are three current world records held in this area, a
Swift out and
return distance, an
ATOS out and
return distance and an
ATOS speed
around a 100 km cylinder. I may have missed a previous record or two and
these don't completely match what was said in the film. Many more world record
have been set in other locations, so this site is not necessarily the end all
and be all of world record setting as implicitly claimed in the video. The video is fun to watch and to listen to these besotted hang glider pilot
living the dream.
