We were using live tracking at the Worlds.

Task 2: http://www.livetrack24.com/tasks/293/score
The devices that we used use the GSM phone network for rapid updates of the
pilot's position and altitude. It is my understanding that there is an addition
to the standard GSM network that allows these trackers to work effectively in
Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
It is also my understanding that they do not work well in the US nor in the
Australian rural areas where CDMA (their version called Next G) is used for long
distance cell phone communication. So it would not be possible to use this type
of live tracking for US competitions or for the pre-Worlds and Worlds in
Australia.
It would be possible to use a satellite communication system, for example SPOT.
See here: http://www.findmespot.com/en/. Two of the problems with this system is that
the update time interval is 10 minutes, not every few seconds. In addition, the
SPOT units don't transmit pilot altitude. So they are not appropriate for live
tracking during a competition.
Pilot flying at the World Record Encampment really appreciated their SPOT units
(when they worked correctly) and the drivers appreciated knowing pretty much
where their pilot was.
