First day at the Southwestern Ontario Gliding Association fun meet
in Ontario Canada and we have to report yet another tug (Dragonfly with a 583
motor) crash. At 5:45 pm Saturday "Pete" took over towing for Steve from a day
with powerful thermals that were recorded on my Flytec as much as 1700 fpm on
tow. The wind was now 0-5 on the runway. Pete for reasons unknown pulled the tug
straight up as the glider pilot came off the cart. Glider pilot tried to follow
by pushing out which may have made things worse as Pete released the hang glider
pilot from the tug. Some say the engine may have quit at that point, tug tried to recover, impacting
just 100 yards down the runway. Pete had to cut out of the wreck, air lifted to Hamilton Hospital with spine
injuries and loss of use in arms and feet. Operation Sunday was hopeful that he
may get better. The Southwestern Ontario Gliding Association will be looking for a new tug and I
will update you as to Pete's progress as we hear more from the hospital. http://soga.ca/
