Gerolf's experience is a little different than ours. 2mm side
wires are certainly the weakest component on a T2-144 and will fail long before
the down tubes. We have extensive load test data to support that since we've
failed both 3/32 cables and down tubes on other gliders while load testing at
higher than certification loads. Certainly, it's possible to certify a glider with the thin wires and we did that
as far back as the Fusion by restricting the load test to the minimum required
loads. The problem is that our testing has shown that 2mm wires are much more
sensitive to damage that 3/32 wires. It's hard to argue that the 2 mm (5/64)
wires aren't the weakest component of the system when we've seen two or more
failures in service.
