Saint Andre les Alpes and Speed to Fly

Do you think they will ever learn that setting a 'safety
turnpoint' to give an upwind glide into the StAndre landing field always
produces the most dangerous part of the course? My first thought when I saw the
course was - people will be pushing bar hard to get through the headwind as they
fly low over town. Not safe. Particularly that one. We've used that one in the
British Open and had to stop the task because conditions approaching the 'safety
turnpoint' were so dangerous.

What I hear from the competitors is that serial class competitions
is good for the formerly middle-of-the-field, who are now in amongst the lead
gaggle. It is bad for the pilots who used to lead out the lead gaggle because
there is now much less chance to catch up if you make an error. The reason is
that the difference between top speed and speed-to-fly is so much smaller than
it was with open class wings.
