Location : Roldanillo, is the main site for paragliding and hang gliding events in
Colombia.
The PWC was held here in Jan of 2011 with great flying and all international
pilots swearing to come back. They will be flying the pre paragliding World Cup
in Roldanillo from Jan 7 to the 14th, with pilots from all over the world
competing . The town is located at the west side of the Valle del Cauca at the
foot of the Cordillera Occidental.
The town sits at a height of 966 meters above sea level and has an average
temperature of 23 C.
Takeoff : Located 15 minutes drive from the main plaza of Roldanillo. The road
access to the take off is paved
Task flying area : Colombia is an agricultural country, so you will find that a
big part of the terrain will have some kind of cultivation but apart from
restricted areas of intense cultivation the availability of open landing zones
is not a problem. The Valle del Cauca has some of the best road infrastructure
in the country; a main highway at the east of the valley, a important road at
the west side of the valley and many secondary roads connecting each side of the
valley. Many useable tracks and farm roads link the farms and sugar cane fields.
There are many potential goal fields these will be defined and their
availability and condition verified by the organisation at least one month prior
to the competition. Most of the valley is between a height of 850m - 950m above
sea level.
Local facilities : Roldanillo is a town of 40,000 people and such has full
infrastructure for an event of this nature including a local hospital, fire
department etc. Hotels are available and the cost is approx US$15 PER NIGHT.

In January, 2012, in Roldanillo, Colombia, South America, we will
having an incredible flying season.
January is a really nice time to fly down here, with light winds that make for a
lot of different tasks, and with a ceiling of +1500 m agl and nice and gentle
fat thermals that make for safe and enjoyable flying.
The event will be FAI Category 2, scored with GAP, which will give pilots points
for their FAI world ranking. It's mountain and valley flying with foot launch
takeoff. People around Roldanillo are really nice and are willing to help the
foreign and local pilots in any way they can. Money is not an issue as
Roldanillo is a small town and everything (food, lodging, and transportation,
driver) is really inexpensive.
If you want to come and fly with us, please contact Mike Glennon, writing him at
<mikeglennon>
so he can arrange your lodging and travel to and from Cali to Roldanillo.
Colombia is one of the "best flying places" of the world, and you can read about
the flights made down here by the many foreign paraglider pilots that had
visited before (at the 2011 Pre-PWC and subsequent PWC, in 2012) in the Oz
Report.
