There are two ways of doing the custom laminates that you see on
the big exotic racers.
North Sails has this huge mold with hydraulic cylinders to control the shape.
They put down a layer of film, adhesive, then the guy in the harness lays high
strength fibers on the load paths, another layer of film, and then they vacuum
and cook it. The laminate comes out of the mold with camber molded in place. We
made the harnesses for their first 3-D laminate mold about twenty five years
ago.
Polyant's D4 system uses an automated mechanism for fiber placement but the sail
is cured flat then cut into sections so the sail maker can add shape.
