Bringing gliders on V. Australia from LA to Oz
In November, Shaun O'Neill brought three gliders in four
containers (three wrapped gliders and a box of the remaining pieces) from LA to
Melbourne. Because the gliders were sports equipment he paid half the rate of
over sized baggage. As I recall $500 for the three gliders and additional box.
He told me that flying into Melbourne was not a great idea as the baggage
conveyor had a ninety degree turn that couldn't accommodate the gliders,
requiring human intervention.
A few days ago Mitch Shipley brought over two gliders and a total of four bags
for an excess baggage charge of $100. Steve Pearson said that Mitch told Dustin
that everyone was very friendly.
I had a chance to speak with Mitch here in Forbes as he was getting ready to
fly. He said that the limit is four bags per passenger. The weight limit on each
sporting equipment bag was 70 pounds. That he had to put two gliders worth of
outboard leading edges, Mylar, leading edge stiffeners, etc. in the snowboard
bag, and his harness and all the accompanying gear in the forth bag. He was
close to the weight limit on all bags. I would suggest taking only one glider
per pilot.
The cost should have been $300, but the check in desk was kind to him.
