Forbes Flatlands - fourth task

The winds are forecasted to be southwest for the next three days
in addition to today, Monday. We've got a letter from CASA that allows us to go
into the Parkes CTAF (a cylinder 18.52 km around the Parkes airfield, just
barely to our northeast) as long as we get out of it by 5 PM.

We have an official at the Parkes aerodrome with a aircraft frequency radio and
UHF radio advising any aviation traffic of hang glider traffic to the west of
the airfield. There is a regularly scheduled flight that comes in from Sydney at
6 PM, so we have to be out of the CTAF by 5 PM. We also put an additional 5 KM
cylinder around the Parkes aerodrome and to treat it as a CTAF that we don't
have permission to enter (pilots get penalty points if they enter it).

The task is 150 KM to the northeast to a small airfield just northeast of
Wellington. Pilots will have to pass over two small treed ridges on their way
there. The wind is strong out of the west south west so it will be very
difficult to stay out side the Parkes CTAF. We have a 25 KM radius turnpoint
centered at Mines, northwest of Parkes, hopefully pulling pilots further west
(into the twenty two knot wind) and making their trip around Parkes easier. We
definitely expect that no pilots will be any where near Parkes at 5 PM (unless
they are on the ground).

Towing today in the fourteen knot winds with eighteen knot gusts was without
much anxiety and pilots got away quickly. Many were able to stay near the air
field and not get blown much down wind to the east. Still this is going to be a
very difficult (not to say World Class) task.
