Shasta Valley LZ improvements

Located in the Shasta Valley near scenic Mt. Shasta, the Herd Peak
and nearby Whaleback have enjoyed increased flying activities over the last
several years, primarily by paragliding pilots. There have been a number of
flights over 100 miles. The size of the existing landing zones in the past have
limited hang glider usage.
This winter, there was an exciting development at the Herd landing area. The
landowner received a grant to create a "fire safety area" for the immediate
neighborhood. This resulted in the clearing of a very large open area adjacent
to the old existing Herd LZ. The clearing, when totally finished will be in the
form of a large horseshoe ( .4 miles on the long legs and .2 miles on the short
leg). When the work is done, one lineal mile approximately 200 plus feet wide
will be available for landing! It should revolutionize hang gliding in the
Shasta Valley.
Herd Peak and the Herd Landing Zone are on private property and require a signed
