I received the following reply from Go Pro support. They are aware of the glitch
apparently and issued the following with a solution to update to firmware v.70 I
have taken mine back to the outlet I bought it from and am awaiting a new one.
I'll have to check and see if it contains the latest firmware. Good luck all!!

We have recently discovered some 'bugs' in the camera's firmware that can cause
the issue you are experiencing. We have corrected this problem through a newer
firmware that has been released. Please be sure to update your camera to the
