Virtual Reality
The Oz Report main web page and the forum were down for almost two
days starting on Friday as Scare moved everything over to the virtual server and
we had our web host, http://pair.com,
change the DNS pointers to the new server. Scare jumped on it after working his
real job and by Saturday evening most functionality was back up and running.
Scare writes:
Would have been days faster if not for that database problem,
which caused other weird problems. The main site will be faster when I get the caching system working. Without that
the database, the scripts have to pull the info from the sources each time, and
some of those weren't working (thanks, FAI) which made it real slow. I've compared the output of phpinfo() on the dedicated and virtual servers. Not
many differences that should matter. Register_globals defaults to off now, I'll
have to keep an eye out for that. SQL allows persistent connections now which
could speed things up if implemented. Ipv6 compatibility is enabled, should be a
good thing, but might need adjusting for.
I'm looking forward to much greater speed and capacity on our new
server.
