I've been working on the Apex for over 10 years (off more than
on). The Apex is a rigid wing of 42 ft. Span and 156 sq. ft. of wing area. The
leading edge has a sweep of 16°. The composite D-tube is 40% of chord. There are
currently wing tip rudders. It has a conventional control frame but uses cables
to operate the tip rudders. The original twist grips were on the base tube but
this version will uses the control frame like the ATOS. Stall is under 20 mph
and Vb is 60 mph. Minimum sink is about 115 fpm. The Apex rigid wing hang glider's trailing edges that were layed up this
afternoon. This is not quite enough of the trailing edges for one wing half.
These will be secured to the ribs. The ribs will be attached to the D-tube and
will not fold on this version. Eventually this will be covered with either
Tedlar or PolyFiber P-106 fabric. The upper surface will be glued to the ribs
while the lower surface will be removable for maintenance and modifications.
This will mostly follow Danny Howell's original design, but hopefully this Apex
will be modified to the Bell Shaped Lift Distribution championed by Al Bowers.
