The NAM forecast from XCSkies was for light winds at 2,000', but the RUC did
call for higher winds just in our area, out of the northeast, across Lake
Okeechobee. Well, the RUC under Dr. Jack had it right and I should have double
checked the XCSkies. Their RUC also forecast higher winds.
After testing the winds we recalled the task and sent the pilots, almost all of
whom are new to competition, to the west south west to the La Belle airport.
Those more experienced pilots needed to come back up wind and then go back to La
Belle if they were A class.
The cu's were thick starting about five kilometers to the west as the wind off
the lake suppressed the thermal development near the flight park. Still a few
thermals did form nearby and got pilots up and away.
Pilots reported personal bests going past the goal (a mere twenty kilometers
away). The English speaking team was first on Monday slightly ahead of the
Russians. The teams aren't divided by skill level, so there is some unfairness
there. The A pilots haven't received any points for helping their C pilots yet,
so we'll encourage them more today.
