The Flying Launch Cart
So easy to pull in and round out at two feet above the ground
with wheels beneath you
Gregg Ludwig takes this photo as I get prepared for my first
flight since my shoulder surgery on February 6th, nine weeks ago:
I'm flying on Gregg's Flying Launch Cart connected to a Wills Wing Falcon 195.
I'm feeling great because I know I don't have to flair the glider (there is a
stiff wind, so I probably wouldn't have to anyway). I've got my accustomed footwear for Florida flying so Greg could identify me. I had a nice thermal flight, but it was clear to me that the shoulder wasn't
ready for a lot more just yet. It was mostly single handed flying. I could push
out no problem, but pulling in was more difficult. I kept my right arm over the
base tube most of the time and relaxed. The 195 gets pushed around a bit by the thermals and falls pretty fast going up
wind. But the cool part was pulling in the bar and coming in fast into ground
effect with no worries whatsoever. I just let the bar out at a couple of feet
and rolled in. The Flying Launch Cart is quite smooth due to its shock absorbers, both on
launch and landing. And after you land you don't have to carry anything, just
push the glider over to the launch area. Steve Pearson says that he is going to mountain launch his. I assume at
Marshall.
