The task for the fifth day:
With the forecast for winds as strong as the day before (but decreasing by 5
PM), and this time out of the north instead of west northwest, we send pilots to
the south southeast hoping that they will enjoy the tail winds, instead of the
cross wind from the day before.
The forecast is also for no lift at 5 PM over our area, so we launch a little
early (1:30 PM instead of 2 PM), but that is a mistake, as a few pilots have to
relight. The sky fills up with nice cu's starting after 1 PM.
The major concern is with pilots not having the judgment to be able to choose
landing areas where they can be retrieved easily. I go over the route closely in
Google Earth with the pilots, hoping to give them an idea of where they should
fly. I encourage them to go east early to get over the paved highway. We'll see
if the new pilots can keep themselves out of trouble (they do).
I've got a TV screen high in the Oz Report World Headquarters and can wirelessly
project what is displayed on my new Dell laptop onto the TV screen for the
entertainment of the task committee. Then I project the display onto the smaller
TV screen that is situated outside rotated out from the storage area in the
trailer next to the stairs. All the pilots get to to see the weather and task on
that TV screen.
Wolfi launched second to be a wind technician. He edited out his
Wills Wing camera boom
created by Steve Pearson. This is Florida, as it has been every day here.
Derrick didn't make it to the first turnpoint, while many
pilots made goal. All the pilots flying Wills Wing T2C's, including Pedro on the
prototype T2C 136, made it back to the flight park. Apparently the winds died
down early.
The Russian-speaking team won the day again.
