The task committee (Paris, Larry, and John Simon) called an eighty four
kilometer triangle task to the northwest, which all the competitors made, other
than me, who didn't find the second thermal. Larry Bunner reported a number of
1000 fpm average climbs. The blue sky was full of cu's in that direction, while
it was overcast and gray to the south and east.
You can find the task at the link to Soaring Sport above.
The winds were light as predicted allowing for a task that came back to the
flight park. The sky was OD'ed early in the day, but the cu's broke up and the
rain to the south stopped (although the sky down there didn't clear until much
later).
We started launching an hour earlier at noon and many pilots took the 1:15 start
time (the second start).
The Sport Class had a 32 km out and return task to the north also and one pilot
was able to complete the task.
I broke a weak link at less than 200' on the first tow (I was second in line).
Took another tow very quickly thereafter and was climbing with Paris, Larry,
Gregg, and Bob. Then I followed them to the next cloud and didn't find any lift
far below them and had to go back to the flight park.
I caught 100 fpm at 200' and climbed back to 900' but it gave out and I had to
land.
I had a third flight, found good lift after being towed away from it, climbed to
4,000' when the lift quit just below cloud base, went on glide, came in under
other pilots, but found no lift and landed after flying with buzzards that
didn't get up either. I'd really like to get the second thermal here on the
DelMarVa peninsula.
