"Rethinking Madness" is an extremely important and timely book,
coming as it does as the long-dominant "medical model" of psychosis is beginning
to be seen as inadequate and misguided for understanding and effectively
treating psychotic suffering. I'll echo what other reviewers have said about Rethinking Madness - Dr. Williams
does an excellent job laying out both the paradigmatic conceptions of psychosis
and strong challenges and alternatives to these paradigms, all while writing in
a clear and accessible style that makes this book a great resource for both
professionals and laypeople curious about thinking more creatively about
psychosis. Rethinking Madness has finally given me some hope for my friends who have been
diagnosed as schizophrenic, and their families trying to provide support for
them. Rather than repeating other reviewers I am moved to simply offer an enormous
thank you Paris Williams. Rethinking Madness is certainly a masterpiece of
research, integration, expansion and communication into a huge blind spot in
Western Society. I just marvel at the courage, dedication, love and wisdom
innate in Paris that would inspire him to embark on and complete such a
monumental work. My hope is that this book becomes essential reading for anyone
in the mental health field. Again well done Paris. Rethinking Madness is a cornucopia of brilliant insight. In reading this as a
psychologist I saw that it not only offers an awe inspiring revisioning of
"psychosis," but rends the veil on psychological mysteries that have to do with
the very nature of what it means to be human. Dr. Williams brilliantly speaks to those very points. This is a book that really opened my eyes in understanding psychosis. This is an exceptional book. Dr. Williams writes with the confidence and
compassion of someone who deeply understands this complex territory.
Importantly, the book is written in a way that makes it illuminative for
professionals, at the same time being accessible for non-professionals. I venture to state that this book is essential for mental health professionals,
and for anyone interested in the significance of psychosis. Rethinking Madness is an excellent resource that shares the human experience of
psychosis and offers hope and understanding. In "Rethinking Madness" Dr. Williams has made an invaluable contribution, a
treasure trove of resources for the professional and the layperson alike.
