I sat down and discussed my landing videos with Paris Williams and Jim Rooney at
the 2012 East Coast Championship. Jim was quite clear that all his landings
techniques required that you not be holding yourself up by pulling down on the
uprights. They all required a light touch on the downtubes so that you can feel
the trim and know when to flare.
Paris said that he pulls himself up on the down tubes after initially starting
low. (He also flies with a Wills Wing Covert harness.) This precludes being able
to feel when the glider goes to trim. He also holds up the boot when he rocks up
(based on advice from Dustin Martin) to reduce the friction from the string
connected from the boot to the slider and allows the slider to go all the way
up.
Here is a clip I took a few years back of a flight from Ben Nevis
in Western Victoria Australia. I had the Wing cam on showing the landing from
the side, it give a really good clear view of the position of my hands and
harness angle. Its a very light wind landing in my Airborne C4 13.
Note his relatively low hand position, harness type (Rohan's), and
angle with respect to the horizon and with respect to the downtubes (quite
shallow).
