Recently a new Dutch coastal soaring site was opened. It's close
to the Rotterdam Harbour and today eight pilots were able to fly it for the
first time as you can see in the little video I made: https://vimeo.com/44207555. There used
to be a soaring site quite close to this new site, but due to expansion of the
harbour it was closed about two years ago.
The Dutchies decided to do what they do best: make some new land in the sea to
expand the harbour. Luckily the spatial planners of this project took good care
of the recreational possibilities by allowing hang gliders to fly the dunes
there as well, just like many other (extreme) sports that have gotten their own
area. The site is called "Maasvlakte 2" and will have an even bigger area to fly
from in autumn 2012.
