The Team Challenge starts Sunday, September 30th and runs through
Saturday, October 6th. We will continue our classic format with an A level team
leader mentoring the B and C level pilots on his team in the art of cross
country flying. Our format challenges each level of pilot skill while keeping
the teams flying together and the retrievals reasonable. All teams will help
with task committee and safety committee responsibilities, so everyone will know
the latest developments and become as involved as possible in this excellent
learning experience. To keep things lively, we expect to have one open distance
day, if the weather permits, so pilots can go for their personal bests.
We will have on site breakfasts and dinners so no one will need to miss out on
any of the great talks and seminars. The Henson Gap site is home to our famous
radial launch ramp and park-like camp grounds with bath house, hot showers, free
Wi-Fi and club house. Camping is free to all Tennessee Tree Toppers members and
their guests. We'll have nightly seminars with formal talks, and informal
debriefings lead by Mike Barber and other experienced competition level pilots.
There will be lots of seminars ready to go for blown out days or pilots can
choose to hike, bike, visit local parks or check out Chattanooga for a wide
variety of pastimes. We will wrap it all up with a fun Tennessee Tree Toppers
Oktoberfest party with awards and a live band.
This year, the Tennessee Tree Toppers Team Challenge is going to be even better.
Mike Barber and many other competition level mentors are coming to help us with
our team teaching format and evening lecture series. Jim Rooney is coming to
help with a video landing seminar. We will have the video launch clinic too. As
you know, Team Challenge is limited to H3 and H4 pilots with solid launch,
landing and good thermal soaring skills since it is a soaring and cross country
learning competition. This year, we are going to add an H2 fun competition
before and after the Team Challenge pilots do their thing. The H2 event will
focus on launch technique, landing approach, and spot landing skill development.
We expect a lot of participation in this fun competition and landing clinic held
at Henson Gap, the easiest to fly H2 site around. All H2 participants will be
included in the Team Challenge seminars and activities and are welcome to all
the Tennessee Tree Toppers amenities.
Tennessee Tree Toppers is also promoting ham radio competency with a seminar to
help us use our expensive radio equipment. We will offer a ham radio technician
exam the week before Team Challenge and the Saturday evening before Team
Challenge starts for interested pilots who have studied enough to take the exam.
If you take it a week before Team Challenge, you should have your license by the
start of Team Challenge. Go to the Tennessee Tree Toppers website and follow the
links to ham radio exam prep sites that will make getting ready easy. If you are
interested in the ham radio exam, please contact me to get on the list.
Tennessee Tree Toppers is doing even more to promote advancement in flying
skills by helping sponsor the Southern Para Pilots Team Challenge. Their meet
will be held in parallel with Team Challenge from the two paragliding launches
in the Sequatchie Valley. Tennessee Tree Toppers will be assisting with the
paragliding competition's seminars and will help with venue, weather workups and
coordination of tasks. We look forward to partying with our paragliding friends
at the big wrap up party. Tennessee Tree Toppers money donated by the Foundation
for Free Flight to promote Team Challenge like events will be used to help get
their first event off the ground. Thank you Foundation for Free Flight! You can
visit their website for more information on their important contributions to
free flight! http://USHGF.org.
