I was at Greifenburg free flying with some Austrian friends last
weekend. Must have been around 80 hang glider pilots on the hill. Great to see
such a huge number of hangies on the hill.
I spoke with Wolfi on Sunday morning, he said he had a 10 minute lead on Gerolf
on Saturdays task nearing the end, but played it safe and took a slow climb to
ensure goal. He ended up 50 points behind Gerolf overall after the Saturday task
of around 120km.
Sunday, the weather did not look so good, with overdevelopment coming our
direction from Lienz to the west. I think they changed the task a couple of
times, eventually setting a task of around 90km. The overdevelopment dissipated
and the day turned on, much to my amazement!! A local paragliding comp held in
Lienz (about 40km to the west of us) was canned by 12pm. Perhaps a little early
on that call!!
All of the contenders for the victory of the Austrian nationals, took off one
after the other, climbing out in what looked like very weak lift. Slowly they
climbed up to cloudbase and began the final day to decide the second round of
the Austrian nationals.
Cloudbase wasn't so high above the hill, but made for great race conditions on
the day. Wolfi flew brilliantly, finishing second for the day, but taking the
overall lead on the last day.
Congratulations to Wolfi, a very popular winner of this year's Austrian
nationals!!
