The body of an American paraglider who spiralled out of control
and into the Lillooet River during a national competition last weekend was found
Tuesday trapped under a log jam.
John Clifford, 55, of Seattle, was competing in the Canadian National
Paragliding Championships when he hit a storm front Monday afternoon.
Event organizers say it's likely Clifford's wing collapsed and his lines
twisted, before he plunged into the fast-flowing river about 18 kilometres
northwest of Pemberton.
Witnesses heard him call for help before he was dragged underwater.
"He was flying low over the river and trying to cross it. It appears he was
already in distress," said Nigel Protter, who is co-organizing the event. "He
wasn't flying as confidently as he might have. He was struggling with the
elements."
