Wills Wing in Germany

Antonio Estupiñán writes:

There are a lot of Wills Wing fans here in Germany and we have a
problem. We can't be licensed to fly the U2 145 or the small T2C. I have posted
in a forum here and they write that the problem is not so much with the DHV but
with Wills Wing, who needs only to pay for a test flight and submit data of the
wing. I would really love to go for a U2 145 and I think it could be of interest
for Wills Wing to invest a little to mix up in the German market.

I have written about this issue previously:

Mike Meier responds:

The process is in progress at the present time, but it is a little
more involved than simply submitting a glider for a test flight and sending the
technical specs. We could do both of those today, and could have done both
months ago. In addition to that, the owner’s manual has to be translated into
German, which we have done, but now, since the last time we certified a glider
with the DHV (in April 2008 we submitted the T2C 154 and Sport 2 155 for DHV
certification by the normal process, which was completed nine months later in
January 2009), there are apparently a significant number of new requirements for
the owner’s manual that we did not have to meet then, so there is more work to
be done there.

Also, in addition to the written HGMA certification documentation, the DHV
apparently now wants the video documentation of our flight testing and vehicle
testing, which at present exists only in a non-compatible US format, so there is
some more work to be done there as well. We are working on it and hope to make
some progress soon, but we are very lean here in terms of staff (no staff
basically – just three of us owners and the production workers), so it takes
time to set aside the resources to get these things done. But we’ll keep working
on it, and thanks for the reminder that we need to get it done.

I appreciate Mike writing so promptly. I also had assumed the
issue was resolved, but when I wanted to buy a U2 145 I was confronted with the
fact that it is still illegal to fly the U2 145 here, which would involve
trouble with insurance, etc., if something ever happened. The German Open thing
was a good fire, but it threatens to go out before something real happens. I
will try to get some more pilots here to keep the process going.

Here a nice thing one (rather snobby) guy said who I met in Bassano: "I like
quality, that's why I drive BMW and fly Wills Wing". I share with many the
opinion that WW has a wonderful hardware and great craftsmanship.
