The Cloudbase Foundation is a non profit organization that has
become very important to La Escuela Los Algarrobos. Comprised of hang glider and
paraglider pilots from the US, the mandate of the Cloudbase Foundation is
simple. They help communities wherever they fly. The Cloudbase Foundation was founded by Ricker Goldsborough in 2009. As a
relative newcomer to hang gliding at the time, he was seeking a more meaningful
and sustainable way to participate in his new found passion. Travel far and wide to fly, Ricker came to the conclusion that giving back to
the communities of the locales they visited would be a sustainable way to
participate in the sport. It would also ensure that the money donated and grants
given were used as they were intended. Although many pilots contribute to the foundation, Ricker credits Jeff OBrien
and Zac Majors as providing much of the inspiration in getting things off the
ground. In fact it was actually Jeff who discovered La Escuela Los Algarrobos
and the JDB Foundation in Canoa the year before. The Canoa Ridge Race is what brings these hang gliding pilots to Canoa each
year. Jeff had already raised money for the JDB Foundation and then Ricker
decided to take the whole idea one step further. Thats when he came up with the
plan to give to the communities that they visit, wherever that may be. And, he
has followed through. In a mere three years, The Cloudbase Foundation has projects in Ecuador, Ghana,
Haiti, Nepal, Mexico and the United States. Thanks to fundraisers, in kind donations and volunteer teaching staff, La
Escuela Los Algarrobos has received over $14,000.00 in the form of grants for
teachers from CBF. In addition, they also donated $3,000 towards building of a
classroom, computer equipment, books, paper, printer, paper, toys, medications,
backpacks and educational materials. Wellness Wednesdays. With the support of the Cloudbase Foundation and two nurses, a weekly
preventative health care and monitoring program was designed. And now there is a
health care worker present at the school every Wednesday. The nurses evaluate
student health concerns, give first aid where required and consult with parents
one on one. Along the coast an upper respiratory infection called the gripe had become a
going concern for the school. It is contagious, and lasts for a week or so.
Children are often heard coughing and sneezing. And of course, days of school
are missed as this common cold passes around families and neighbors. The Anti-Gripe Campaign was introduced as part of the Wellness Wednesdays
Program. It was a two week intense program focused on the prevention of the
spread of the gripe.
