"It was like 'wow,'" said Shipley, a retired Navy commander who
since 2010 has been the lead flight instructor at Quest Air Hang Gliding in
Groveland. This week, Shipley will achieve his dream of competing for the U.S.
in the World Hang Gliding Championships. Competition starts today and runs
through Jan. 17 in Forbes, Australia.

Shipley, 55, of Tavares, said he's taken up other active pursuits including
scuba diving, motorcycle riding and skydiving, but nothing compares to hang
gliding.
