A good friend of mine, Sebastian Katz, recently completed a flight
on the west coast close to Auckland, New Zealand. The conditions to achieve this
sort of flight is extremely rare for a hang glider pilot. Finally, after more
than ten years of waiting, he achieved it along with three other pilots and...

You can see several gust fronts in this loop if you look closely.
The point is, radar updates about every six minutes, and you have plenty of time
to see these things coming under certain circumstances, but only if you are
monitoring.
The pilot who died at Henson's Gap when...

The past several days have seen some great local flying, as a rare
mid- summer cold front made it all the way down to the gulf coast. Its influence
precluded long distance flights but several triangle attempts with remarkably
strong conditions at time were made. Pilots were late launching on...

A nice little flight
here.Chris Zimmerman hauled me up at 10:05. I think that he bounced off the ground
twice, but I held on and he didn't let me go. I've gone to being towed off the
keel and my chest so the bar pressure is much reduced. There were thin cu's in a street over the airfield at Chris' house. The wind was
straighter down the runway...

Well after two weeks the Paragliding Worlds in Sopot are over. Unfavorable north
wind led to many cancelled days but the pilots still managed to get in five
tasks. (Apparently there was a north-facing alternate site but it had
last-minute airspace issues due...

Roger Hoyt:
It may not be a good time to plan a flying vacation to
southwestern Oregon or Woodrat Mountain. Air tankers and helicopters are thick.
Best case scenario is that smoke will ruin your flying day. These are photos of
my neighborhood. Fires have come within a mile of town. Some neighborhoods
already under mandatory evacuation. I'm...

Day started windy from the NW then stayed that way, and with a
high lapse rate the most common word heard in the LZ to describe conditions was
ratty. As you can see from the tracks, some had great flights. Others bailed early to
ease their minds, but found themselves in a turbulent LZ. No incidents though.
More were...

more limited here as a front heads south:
This is Saturday's forecast. Looks like it will be post front here on Sunday.
Things are looking up for Sunday or Monday.

Thursday was a good day for flights of 100-175 miles, with frontal
activity in the Hill Country and north limiting further distances. Local flying
in the afternoon was spectacular, and might repeat today. As such, a task
committee of Jim Yocum, Atilla Bertok and BJ Herring is calling an FAI 100km...
